Osowiec Fortress was a typical barrier fortress. Situated in the narrowing of the Biebrza marshes, it was to be a cover for the Białystok - Królewwiec railway and communication route. The fortress was built in 1882-1887 (the first design works were carried out from 1873) and modernized until 1892. The general designer of the fortress was General Eduard Iwanowicz Totleben. It was modernized again after the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. At the beginning of World War I it was supplemented with elements of field fortifications. Before World War II, already under the management of the Polish army, it was strengthened with permanent fortifications. The fortress was one of the few that was never conquered, and its defense in 1915 went down in history, hence it was compared with the war in 1916 at Verdun in France. The Osowiec Fortress Museum and tourist routes of Fort I are located within the Polish Army unit. Visiting these facilities can take place in organized groups, only after arranging an appointment with a guide from the Osowiecki Towarzystwo Forttyfikacji (OTF) at the telephone number 600 941 954. Biebrza National Park owns only Fort IV, where the educational path around Fort IV of the Osowiec Fortress has been designated, which You can visit the generally applicable rules in the BPN (including after buying tickets to the park). Fort II (Zarzeczny) located near the educational path Kładka is the property of the Poviat Eldership in Mońki. Visiting the object is prohibited due to poor technical condition and health-threatening accidents which have suffered in the past by tourists.
